Buffy Coats
The buffy coat is the fraction of uncoagulated blood that contains most of the white blood cells and platelets after a density gradient centrifugation process. Once the centrifugation is carried out, three differentiated layers can be distinguished, one of transparent liquid (plasma), another layer of red liquid that contains most of the red blood cells, and a thin layer in the middle (buffy coat) that contains the most white blood cells and platelets.
Buffy Coats Features
Source: The whole blood is collected at one of our 10 licensed blood centers located in the US (Memphis, Miami, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Jackson, Temple and Louisville) or at one of our more than 30 blood collection centers in Germany. Whole blood is further processed in our processing centers to produce the buffy coats.
Donors Criteria: Donors have an approved consent for donating blood. All donors are screened to ensure that each of them is in good health condition and that products are not collected from a high-risk population for blood-borne infections.
Donor Data Provided: Age, gender, race and blood group.
Size:>60 mL
Use: Research and Development. Bulk quantities also available for further manufacturing of IVD reagents.
Viral Testing: Donors from the USA are tested for the standard FDA-required viral markers and found negative for HIV-1-NAT, HCV-NAT, HBV-NAT, WNV-NAT, anti-HIV ½, anti-HCV, HBsAg and syphilis using FDA-approved methods. Donors are also screened for Chagas and, when applicable, a licensed NAT for Babesia is performed.
Donors from Europe are tested for the standard European-required viral markers and found negative for HBsAg, anti-HBc, HIV-1/2-Ab, HCV-Ab, HIV-1-NAT, HCV-NAT, HBV-NAT, HAV-NAT, PVB19-NAT, HEV-NAT, WNV-NAT (tested from June to November) and syphilis.
